We bought our Bechstein at Bonham’s in 2006, at auction – an 1897 antique in wonderful condition and with great character. Our performers and audience alike love her tone, soft touch, idiosyncrasies and good looks. Some of those idiosyncrasies of age have been softened in a comprehensive internal restoration in 2017 by piano restorer, Dan Juniper, but the lady has lost none of her individuality and singing tone.
Arriving from Germany to perform as part of the London Jazz Festival, Israeli jazz pianist Omer Klein responded spontaneously, warmly and enthusiastically to the character of the piano, the close relationship with the audience and to the space, shaping his playing accordingly and changing his programme to bring out the best of the piano’s character.
It responds, in sensitive hands, to all types of music, from early music, to romantic, to modern masters, from Bach, through Debussy and Prokofiev to Arvo Pärt – and delivers many colours, pure to rich and dark, but always musical.
It happily and subtly supports the wide range of guest instruments we welcome here, lute, classical guitar, cello, clarinet, oboe, harp, saxophone, viola, the human voice and even classical harmonica.
