AA NOTABLE WINE LIST AWARD 2023/2024

Barny has won the AA Notable Wine List Award for the second year running – we are justly proud of it.

The award is given on the overall quality of its wine selection.

Add to this that there is much comment among reviewers that the wine list is reasonably priced.

AA Notable Wine List Award

Barny always has an overarching vision for how the whole wine list should ‘feel’ and chooses his wines with several qualities in mind:

  • the intrinsic quality of each wine
  • what he has come to know over the years of what our regular customers like
  • wines to enjoy by themselves
  • wines that go wonderfully with food
  • wines that will pair, whether classically, or unusually, with the dishes on our menus
  • wines to linger over
  • wines to stretch the palate
  • representation of grape types and wine growing characteristics across the World
  • the approach and standards of the winemakers
  • well known names with an established reputation – the great classics, as well as wines that have been wrongly ignored over the years
  • representation of organic, biodynamic and natural wines, though the latter hide their light under a bushel
  • more and more, of course, wines from Great Britain
  • and just the right bottles for a celebration and to push the boat out, so there are always some of the great classical names, as well as lesser known wines that will surprise and delight.
AA Notable Wine List Award 2023/24 awarded to The Dysart Petersham

The same care and thinking go into his choice of apéritifs and digestifs, exceptional teas and coffees and non alcoholic cocktails and drinks, also to be found on the list. As with our wines and the ingredients for our dishes, we know exactly where all our drinks come from and how they are created, including our coffees and teas.

Barny comments:

Thank you, AA, for this award- what a pleasure, all round and to be recognised!

Thank you for the support and interest I receive from my suppliers and the wine makers I know personally and whose Estates I have visited

It’s really wonderful work! There is not a wine on the list I have not tasted and many very drinkable wines I have tasted and decided for one reason, or another, not to add to the list, yet

It’s always interesting to see how the same wine from the same part of the same Estate can vary from year to year

It’s such a pleasure to guide customers through the list, to recommend and to see, through very direct and immediate reactions, the pleasure my choices give

Above all, thanks to our customers for enjoying and exploring the Wine List.
